1 August 1916

The Military Service Act 1916 brought into force the conscription of Pakeha men.

No first-class rugby matches were played in 1916, and Lancaster Park was planted out in potatoes, which were sold to raise funds for both the war effort and the local rugby union. They, like their associates around the country, were facing financial hardship due to the fact that had little or no income from gate-takings.

Policemen were regularly sighted at junior football games, which led to a number of letters being written to newspaper editors arguing that the last place a shirker would try to hide would be among spectators at rugby matches.
